Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
